Mondi and Dreco develop powder detergent pack with 50% recycled plastic content

Mondi and Dreco have developed a powder detergent pack using 50% post-consumer recycled plastic content.

Mondi and German home care brand Dreco have developed a new powder detergent packaging format containing 50% post-consumer recycled plastic, as consumer goods companies prepare for tighter recycled-content requirements in Europe.

The new pack is based on Mondi’s re/loop PillowBag structure and has been designed for powder detergent, a moisture-sensitive product that requires barrier protection during storage, handling and retail distribution. According to Mondi, the packaging combines mechanically recycled post-consumer recycled content with moisture resistance, print performance and compatibility with polyolefin mechanical recycling streams.

The development responds to Dreco’s requirement to reduce virgin plastic use while maintaining the functional needs of powder detergent packaging. Mondi said the solution also includes material traceability through its ISCC PLUS mass balance certification.

“Reducing the environmental impact of our packaging is a key priority for us, but performance is critical for products like powder detergent,” said Milo Drehsen, Owner and Managing Director, Dreco. “Working with Mondi has enabled us to introduce a solution that combines high recycled content with the protection our products require.”

The packaging is now available on shelves across retailers in Germany. For home and personal care brands, the development is relevant as detergent packaging must balance recycled-content targets with moisture protection, shelf presentation and handling strength.

Mondi said the pack is intended to help prepare for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which includes a target of 35% recycled content from post-consumer plastic waste for this category of plastic packaging, applicable from 1 January 2030 at the earliest.

“Together with Dreco, we have developed a high PCR packaging solution for a moisture-sensitive application that is designed for recycling,” said Sandor Kardos, Managing Director, Mondi Békéscsaba. “Helping our customer to prepare for regulatory requirements while meeting today’s market expectations.”
